The Philodendron micans variegated albo is an exceptional appearance within the world of the aroid lover. This rare climbing plant combines the velvety, dark green leaves of the classic Philodendron micans with unpredictable patterns of cream to white variegation. Each leaf is unique and can display subtle marbling, splashes or complete sectors in bright white - a rare genetic variation that is highly favored among connoisseurs.
Origin
The species Philodendron micans is native to the tropical rain forests of Central America, particularly in Mexico and surrounding areas. The variegated albo-variant is a rare mutation found only in cultivation and is propagated vegetatively to maintain the variegated leaf markings.
Characteristics
This plant is notable for its velvety leaf surface that displays a subtle sheen when viewed in oblique light. The leaves are heart-shaped and can range from deep olive green to almost purple-brown, depending on the incidence of light. The variegation ranges from fine speckles to broad cream-colored sectors. These variegated patterns make the micans variegated albo a visual eye-catcher in any plant collection.
Care
Light
Bright, indirect light is ideal. Avoid direct sunlight, which can burn the delicate variegated parts. Too little light can reduce variegation.
Temperature
A constant temperature between 18 and 25 °C is recommended. The plant does not tolerate cold and should be kept frost-free.
Substrate
Use an aerated, well-drained aroid substrate based on coconut chips, bark, charcoal and sphagnum. Avoid compact potting soil.
Humidity
High humidity of 60% or more is strongly recommended to prevent leaf damage. In dry areas, a humidifier or regular spraying helps.
Nutrition
During the growing season (spring to fall), give a balanced nutrition for foliage plants biweekly, but avoid over-fertilizing young plants.
Watering
Allow the top layer of the substrate to dry slightly between waterings. Preferably give demineralized water or clean rainwater at room temperature.
Flowering
Although flowering is possible in older specimens, this plant is valued primarily for its foliage. Inflorescences are rare in a domestic environment.
